Velvet ikat is produced by weaving two layers of cloth at the same time and then cutting them apart to form the pile. This process gives the fabric its depth and surface variation. Because the preparation, dyeing, and weaving are all performed by hand, small differences in colour alignment, slubs in the silk threads, and minor weaving irregularities appear throughout the length.
